In an effort to promote inclusive democratic participation, the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) conducted a civic education outreach at Chitipa Prison, targeting inmates with crucial information about the upcoming general elections.

During the visit, NICE engaged the prison population on electoral processes and the importance of informed voting. The initiative aimed to ensure that no citizen, including those incarcerated, is left behind in the democratic process.

Chitipa Prison Superintendent Lupakisho Mkinga expressed appreciation for the visit, saying it demonstrated respect for inmates' rights.

“As prison officers, we are happy that the same information being shared outside is also being disseminated here, Inmates have the right to information, and we do not want to see those rights violated during the campaign period. We encourage all stakeholders to ensure that prisons are not left out.”

Lusako Swira, the District Programs Officer for NICE in Chitipa, highlighted the importance of reaching inmates with electoral information.

“We noted that most inmates lack access to information about candidates and electoral processes and as an organization that promotes governance, democracy, and human rights, we felt it was our responsibility to bridge that gap.”

Swira added that most inmates lack access to newspapers, which often limits their awareness of ongoing political activities. He said the civic education session was designed to equip them with knowledge they are typically denied while incarcerated.

The outreach included interactive sessions on voting rights and the significance of participation in a democratic society. NICE plans to continue similar engagements in other correctional facilities ahead of the general elections.

This initiative underscores the principle that civic rights and access to information should be upheld for all citizens regardless of their incarceration status.
